For a long one, Head up through Pooley Bridge, then back roads to Shap, down the A6 towards Kendal, cut across through Burneside and towards Staveley. Wheelbase cycles in Staveley & Wilf's Cafe are worth stopping at. From staveley, head towards winderemere for a bit, then turn right at ings to hit Kirkstone pass at Troutbeck, then over Kirkstone and back to ullwswater. http://www.strava.com/routes/881826
Another one would be to turn away from the lake near Aira Force, cutting a corner over towards Keswick, then turn eastwards alongside teh A66 and back down to Watermillock on the shore of Ullswater. http://www.strava.com/routes/881844
For a there & back, head down the east side of the lake as far as the road goes. There's a couple of nice little hairpins to give a bit of a challenge.

If you're at the top end of the lake, a loop round Back O Skiddaw from Threlkeld to Calebreck, over to Bassenthwaite, down towards Keswick and back to Threlkeld along the old railway would be doable - much quieter roads than the central lakes.

If you go up Kirkstone, Don't bother stopping at the Kirkstone Inn - its shit and overpriced.
