Garmin Edge 800 Live Segments Page

Has anyone else updated the firmware on their Edge 800 recently (and presumably also the 810) and noticed the annoying segment page that comes up when you’re following a course?
My 800 is now on firmware version 2.70.0.0 and when I plot a course on Garmin Connect and send it over to the Edge using Garmin Express, it apparently has all of the data for the starting/finishing positions of the new Garmin segments that are on that route embedded into the fit file. So when I load up that course on the Edge and start following it, first of all you get an extra page that comes up in your loop of training pages that lists all of the segments present on that course, and secondly you get an annoying beep every time you pass through the start/finish one of the segments.
I can’t figure out a way of turning either of these functions off and they’re driving me mad! I know there’s the menu that allows you to configure your training pages and turn off the Elevation Graph page etc, but I can’t figure out how to get rid of the segments list page. And when you load up the course, you have the option of turning “Course Points” on or off, but I think that’s just asking whether to plot the segment start/finishes on the map.
Can anyone shed any light on this as to how I might get rid of them? Thanks!

One way would be to not use Garmin Connect to create your courses. Other sites don't know about Garmin Segments and won't include them in the course file.0

You must have selected them from Garmin Connect or they would not be on the device.
You have to download the segments to your device to race on them. If you have downloaded them and no longer want them, go into your spanner section, select Segment and delete them from the list.
Or delete them from your segments in Garmin Connect and re-synch.
If you want to keep them for another day, you can also just swipe the page back to the one you wish to view.Boardman Elite SLR 9.2S

Are you talking about using an Edge 1000? I know that has proper functionality for segments, but the 800 doesn't have any menu settings that I can find to enable/disable what I described. I don't have any favourite segments on Garmin Connect as yet, it just automatically creates a list of segments for any course that you have loaded on there that was plotted on GC.wongataa wrote:One way would be to not use Garmin Connect to create your courses. Thanks for the suggestion to use another website for plotting them, that had crossed my mind, but I'm not sure the course elevation profile would work then, haven't tried it as yet.rower63 wrote:I think "Course Points" are the points you "pinned" to the mapping page to first create the course on the mapping page (of a computer or whatever), and this feature allows you to have the unit alert you to them, or ignore them.
Ahhh, that kinda makes sense, I've always had turned them off. Why would anyone want to do that though? They're basically just a routing tool to make the path go the correct way, rather than points of interest along the route.0 -

You can't turn them off on the 1000 either.
If you go to the segments window on Garmin Connect and click the cog, you can remove segments from your GC home. If you re-synch they should disappear. If they don't, you may be stuck with them.Boardman Elite SLR 9.2S

Eight months on and sadly I still haven't found a solution for this.
This weekend I was exploring new roads around the Chilterns and I just quickly loaded a GPX file that I had nabbed from a route on "Ride With GPS". Obviously, as discussed above, this didn't contain any of the Garmin segment data so for once I was spared the incessant segment start/end notifications and useless segment page. Interestingly it did still contain (and properly display) the elevation data, which was nice.
In future I think I'll just use that to plot routes, since it made my ride so much more pleasant. I would prefer to use one service for everything (i.e. Garmin Connect) but if they're intent on ruining people's user experience by forcing unwanted features on to them, then so be it.
Does anyone know if there is a previous version of the Edge 800 firmware that doesn't have this feature (and preferably still maintain the Elevation Profile, seeing as I think that was a fairly recent addition too) and if I would be able to roll back to it? I'm currently on 2.70. Thanks!0 -
I only use RideWithGPS for plotting and downloading routes, I don't bother with Garmin for that aspect. All my ride stats update automatically (and then sync with Strava) when I plug in my 800 for charging, so that's good enough for me.0

Hello BuckMulligan,
The way I was able to get the annoying segment page completely off my Garmin Edge 800 while riding my courses is as follows:
1. Have Garmin Express and Garmin Connect sync with the Garmin Edge 800 device.
2. Make sure NOT to have Garmin Connect & Strava link together ( I always upload my activity rides into Strava separately using the upload file feature - Strava will automatically include their segments upon upload).
3. Make sure to DISABLE the segment feature under your Garmin Connect "privacy" settings, basically you don't want to participate.
4. Since I have ridden all my courses, I have all of my ride data results saved under my "Activities " section in my Garmin Connect. I then deleted all my existing courses that have the segments included on my Garmin Edge 800 device. Make sure you have all your ride data courses already saved under your "Activities " section in your Garmin Connect.
5. Now, go to your "Activities" section in the Garmin Connect and select one ridden activity that you want to put back into your Garmin Edge 800 device as a course. Once you hit view course, on the top right hand corner hit the rounded "cog" and select "Send course to device." Make sure your Garmin Edge 800 device is still connected with Garmin Connect.
6. Once downloading all my courses back into my device using this technique I was finally able to get rid of the segment page on all my courses. Good luck!0
