Component upgrades?

Hi all

Having had my roadie for a few years now I am wondering if it is worth upgrading some of the components on my chariot.

My chariot in question is a fairly basic Bianchi Via Nirone Roadie_zps1eb1c18f.jpg

While it's a nice bike and has served me well I feel it could do with some better brakes, the ones that are on are a bit on the soft side and I feel that I have to really pull to get anything from them. Even now I have had it serviced and adjusted by my local shop I just feel they are lacking.

Anyone out there have any thoughts if its worth an upgrade and if to what? I did think about Shimano 105's or similar..

And while I am at it I did also think about changing the gears, currently again I have a Shimano set up (unsure what grade) and only a 16 speed....

Again If I did, what would be better than what I have now?

Then again it may be worth thinking about a new bike, I have seen a nice BMC GF02 in Evans and my local shop is doing the following bike http://www.palacecycles.co.uk/Giant-Def ... ant&page=2

I'm not in to comps but more a social rider doing 150 miles or more a week in most weather.

Looking forward to hearing back from you with regards this...

  • Before you start spending money upgrading the brakes, try taking the wheels off and giving the rims a good clean with a soapy sponge scourer (the sort SWMBO uses to clean the saucepans), and also degrease and sand down the surface of the brake blocks.

The kind folk at my local done that for me when I took it in for repair/service. They are better but no where near as good as the brakes on my other Bianchi (Hybrid)
