Garmin maps advice needed

I recently purchased a Garmin edge 810 , can someone advise me on maps and how?.

    Thanks for the link :) I followed the instructions and selected the United Kingdom map for Routable Bicycle (Openfietsmap Lite)

    I then selected the "osm_generic_gmapsupp.zip 380mb" the 4th one down and got a 399mb zipped file on my PC. I unzipped the (gmapsupp.img) file to the root of my Micro SD 8gb card and put the SD back in the 810 but when I looked in the 810 settings;-

    Activity Profiles>Train>Navigation>Map>Map Information select map>

    it only shows :- "Enabled - INTL Standard Basemap,NR"
    is that right or should I have a choice.
    I managed to get hold of Garmin Discoverer Maps which had about 20 .img files and I put them on the root of the SD and same , nothing.
    Do I have to activate with the 810 or something , thanks again.

    There should be a folder called Garmin. You need to place the gmapsupp.img file inside their. You should then be able to select in as you tried above. The basemap is, as it implies, a lo-res map that comes withe the unit.

    Ah right, that will be it, I was just sticking the .img staight to the root of the SD. I'll give it a go when I get home, thanks for that

    You can rename the map also. Helps especially when you end up uploading several of them (different countries, etc).

    Call it UK.img for instance.

    Yeah working fine now thanks . Just a quickie, which of the Garmin maps work in the 810 ?. I had Garmin Discover full but it had about 30 odd .img files in it and it wouldn't show up in the 810.

    I can get hold of the Garmin City Navigator as well but I've not tried it yet, I'm just wondering if that will work in the 810

    I have an 800 with city navigator europe maps and the maps are brilliant. I have had it for 3 years and have cycled in remote parts of Spain, Greece, Portugal, France, Germany and the UK and can't recall a road not being marked. I can't remember what I paid - £50ish I think. Definitely worth it and I also use the 800 in the car from time to time.

    I'm struggling with uploading courses I've made on my PC. I have the 810 connected to the PC with Garmin Express and can access it via the web on Garmin Connect but I can't see how I upload courses I've pre-made and saved in Garmin connect.
    anyone help please.

    I just stick them in the 'newfiles' directory and it hoovers them up when you start it up.

    When it's connected to your PC as a mass storage device you can copy/move files into Garmin/newfiles or create the same directory in the sd card and copy there.
