Might get a bit less attention than the star-studded line up of the Vuelta, but the Tour de l'Avenir started today as well.
The Aussies dominated the prologue, 3 in the top 6, as always turning out TT talent.
Challenging route: a couple of hilly/flattish Massif Central stages followed by four moutnain top finishes in the Alps

He looks like a real TT prospect for the future
  • Finally winning this season... somewhat surprised by Alex Clements' selection. Thought they'd have found a place for Linfield.

So apart from the likes of Herklotz and Haig, who're the guns? Teuns for the hills, Hart Kung or even Kung or Rybalkin?

Hmm, the breakaway stayed away on stage 1 and then it was a bunch sprint with 100 odd arriving with the same time.

1 Kristoffer Skjerping (Nor) Norway 3:37:31
2 Sjoerd Ginneken Van (Ned) Netherlands
3 Asbjorn Kragh Andersen (Den) Denmark
4 Daniel Mclay (GBr) Great Britain 2:21:00
    5 Fernando Gaviria (Col) Colombia
    6 Davide Martinelli (Ita) Italy
    7 Ilya Davidenok (Kaz) Kazakhstan
8 Owain Doull (GBr) Great Britain
    9 Tom Bohli (Sui) Switzerland
10 Mikel Aristi Gardoki (Esp) Spain

Note Martinelli is up there - stagiare at Sky. Any relation to Astana's Martinelli?

  • Cheers FJS.

Breakaway won and seems a bit of a crashfest going by l'equipe's report with Gouault breaking his collarbone after his handlebar clipped a Colombian musette and Thiejs Benoot crashing right at the end.

Really is an excellent indicator of talent. Bakelants and Sicard the only disappointments in terms of proper climbers/GC talent. Looking forward to see how Ruben goes at Movistar.

Nice to see Owain Doull up there in a race of this magnitude. I guess he's going to have to make the track or road decision soon.
  • Stage 3
    1. MCLAY Daniel Great Britain

moves him 3rd in points competition ( Martinelli second)

  • Seems Martinelli and Ewan were taken out in a crash just over 3km out. Kung most combative.

Guy has just moved up massive amount of notches:

“I never applied to the Academy”, McLay told Cyclingnews. “In fact I wanted to race in Belgium because I love classics.”
“In Belgium I learned how to race aggressively, especially when there's wind,” he says.

First of the mountain finishes, and a proper one; 10 kms pretty steep
Tour of Qinghai Lake winner Davidenok wins, just beating 19y old Sam Oomen and Colombian Lopez, who takes the overall. Geogeghan Hart up there in 12th. Pretty big gaps already. Latour 4th, Vervaeke 9th, Eiking 14th. Herklotz, Svendsen, Haig, Senni all pretty far down already.

  • Alexander Foliforov Russia
    Pierre-Roger Latour France

    4th and 5th now :)

  • Can't be down to 52 riders from 206 starters?
  • Louis Vervaeke, 8th overall and less than 2 minutes down, got into the breakaway. Was leader on the road till close to the end, but took the stage and directvelo have him at fifth overall. Seems Haig buried himself for Power to close in on Vervaeke.

Lopez still holding firm and good old Tao in the top ten. That guy is the real deal. Should have known it since the time he flew past me during the Ditchling Beacon aged 13 (along with Alex Peters of Madison Genesis).

Great article on the future of cycling

    http://www.cyclismactu.net/news-tour-de ... 44130.html

I wonder how many of them will go on to greater things ? I know the winners frequently feature prominently in later years but the rest of the top ten ?
