Hi, looking to replace my Focus with a steel frame.
Fancy something for all day and I have another carbon frame. Who needs 2!
I have looked at the acciaio and also some vintage on eBay.
The problem is I don't really know what I'm looking for.
I've had a look at some lovely Basso, Olba Tommasini etc but not sure if the seller is overpricing or not.
I will be transferring my existing modern kit- 6800, deda, Archetype.
I don't want my pants pulled down price wise but also need to know my modern stuff will fit.

Where can I read up on this/do some research.
I would rather buy fro someone on here really but not a lot has come up

Matt

A good place to look would be the retrobikes forum - plenty of bikes and frames at good prices come up for sale there.

Definately a good place to look, also look at Genesis stuff, real nice steel frames with modern geometry.

If you are looking to use a modern groupset on a steel frame then you'll need to ensure that the rear spacing is of the correct dimensions (130mm required I believe) or you will need to change the rear spacing by sold setting the frame - see Sheldon Brown site.

Steel seems to be attracting premium prices at the moment and some of the prices being asked for the framesets alone appear to be quite strong.

Quite chuffed with my recent eBay purchase though - Casati in Columbus slx, full Dura-Ace 7400 8 speed groupset and Mavic Open Pro wheels on Ultegra hubs. Lovely condition £430.

This appears to be exactly the same model but with Campag Record rather than DA 7400 - though the asking price appears to be a bit strong in comparison to my purchase.

Would reiterate cubedean's suggestion to consider the various Genesis options. Don't know your budget but you can choose between the cheaper Equilibrium at around £400 or move up to the 853 or 953 models if your pockets are deep enough.

Have just completed a build using a 2012 Equilibrium frame and it's a revelation. You won't be disappointed

I've bitten the bullet and bagged myself a Volare 853 with enve fork for £675 brand new.
Many thanks for all your help. Looking forward to getting it built up on my return from the Alps
