    3 months is typical in my industry (healthcare strategy/management), but depending on your employer could be negotiable if, say, you've wrapped up all your projects or reached a key milestone. 6 months seems a bit OTT - are you going to a direct competitor? If not, you could try demonstrating how you can wrap up your role quicker.

    Have you considered going part time in both roles - so work say 3 days in current job and 2 days in new one?

    It's a tricky one 'cos you don't want to p155 off either party, but if I were your employer I wouldn't want someone hanging around who's wanting to leave - get them out of the door! Too much risk and potential loss of productivity from being de-motivated.

    It's just a hill. Get over it.

    I tried to leave the RAF in 2000, they tried to hold me to an 18 month notice!
