Hardtail advice approx £600

Hi all,

I am about to buy my first bike for years and am looking for a little advice on what to get.

I have around £600 to spend (though will go higher for the perfect bike). All I am looking to use it for at the moment is a bit of cross country exploring.

The Cannondale Trail SL 29 SS caught my eye though I am a little dubious of single speed. The thing I like about this is that it seems to be a good starting point if I want to upgrade.

The Kona Mahuna also looks good. Also, the Kona Unit looks good but again it is single speed.

Does anyone have any thoughts about other bikes I might want to check out?

The last thing I would buy to do XC exploring is a rigid singlespeed. The Kona is overpriced (And I'm biased, I have two)
Have a look at Halfords or Decathlon,
