Went on a ride tonight with a lad on a canyon bike, I was really impressed with the top cap on the bike,
There wasn't one, it looks like some sort of ring fitted which finishes off the look.

Does anyone know if you can buy one from ?? A quick goggle tells me they are called an Acros system but can't see any for sale

  • They now provide a bung, has it slipped down inside?

The bung is sold seperately. The Acros open top cap is just a push fit so might not fit your steerer tube.

Would it not be a standard 1.18th fit?

The stem size on mine is 1.25. Could be worth checking the site as some of the alu models may be 1.18 IIRC.

I've got the Acros headset on my CF SL and while it does look a bit different and hasn't caused any problems I would prefer a closed end on the steerer. They used to sell an optional top-cap but I don't think they do anymore. As mentioned above, many if not all of the bikes fitted with this system have 1 1/4" steerers.

I think Canyon are missing a great opportunity for some nice accessories here. That empty steerer tube just begs to be used for something. Canyon could easily produce a pump or CO2 inflator system that would slide into the end of the steerer providing completely invisible storage for these essential accessories. Alternatively how about tyre levers, a key holder, even a small multi-tool or a small gel flask might be possible. I can't be the only one thinking this?

My Canyon came with one and I didn't like it so got the replacement cap that covers the steerer tube. You can have mine if you want but (and I'm not 100% sure of this) it will only work on the type of steerer/headset that Canyon use and probably won't be compatible with yours. Most top caps have a screw through them down to the expanding bolt thing don't they? And yes, it is 1 1/4".

If they did those in gloss white they'd look just like a toilet!

You might be able to get one direct from Acros if you can work out which you need:-
    http://www.acros.de/SHOP/HEADSET:::8_376.html

As said above you need the complete headset as a 'normal' headset has a screw top that expands a bolt inside, whereas the Acros system uses an expander under the stem.
  • would't it just fill the steerer with water if it rains? BAD news if its a full carbon fork, what with it dissolving in water and all that

Reckon 1.1/4 won't fit a standard stem.. So do all canyons have a 1 1/4 steerer, and the same size stems. ??

There's a small drain hole just above the dropout on the inside of each fork leg, so water accumulation shouldn't be a problem but small bits of occasional foreign matter could theoretically build up in there (a leaf here, a fly there, a gel wrapper stuffed in by a malicious riding buddy.....)

Not sure if it's all of them but all the Canyons I've looked at have 1 1/4" upper headset bearings and steerer tubes and therefore require non-standard stems. Also, in case it's not already clear, you can't just remove the bung & cap from your existing setup to get the open ended steerer. The bung serves a prupose in pre-loading the bearings. The Acros headset does this differently making it possible to leave the tube open, thus that design feature on the Canyon bikes. If you want an open steerer tube you'd need to replace the headset or part of it anyway. It doesn't seem like it's worth the effort to me!

OP as mentioned above by Ai_1 you would need to fit the relevant Acros headset for the top cap to be of any use.
All the Canyon ones including the alu ones look to be 1.25.

You also need the top bearing to be correct. The bevel on the top of the top bearing is different on the Acros headset. So is the aligning ring that goes above it. So you need more than just what appears to be the conical top cap.

As I understand it, once assembled, you push the stem down, do any 'getting the handlebars straight' then tighten the stem on the steerer. Then the adjustment screw on the side of the 'conical top cap' (which is in two parts) forces one part to ride over the other and loads the bearings. All the bung top cap thing is is a cosmetic thing to make the bare chopped off steerer pipe look better.

In short, you will probably need all the parts of the Acros headset that come in the box (certainly all the parts that go at the top of the headtube).

Of course you could do the following (to achieve the look).... just get the cosmetic bung thing from somewhere... adjust your headset and do up your stem, then once that's done and it is ready to ride, remove your top cap and expander bung and any spacers from above the stem, then put the cosmetic bung thing in. But... you've then lost all ability to adjust your headset until you reassemble those bits, so not very sensible really.
