Depends if you've got a 8,9,10 or 11 speed rear system. 8 and 9 were the same on road and mountain bikes but things changed with 10 and 11 speed systems depending on weather it's SRAM or Shimano (which are always incompatible with each other, no matter what speed).

I have a 32 teeth sprocket on my Allez and I used to run it with a Deore mech and it was fine (until it broke), it now runs on a long cage Sora mech and it seems much smoother

Long cage 9spd road or mtb will work fine

+1 but you need a mtb mech. Road mechs are not rated up to 32t, even the long cage ones.

Don't get a 10spd MTB mech - different cable pull

Bloody Hell Maddog. I wish you had said that road bike mechs couldn't handle a 32 cassette before I ordered my Force groupset in the naive belief that the medium cage sold as 32 compatible actually was :-)

Why does Shimano state that a long cage Sora rear mech is rated up to 32t then?

And I shall have to throw away the three Ultegra mechs that I use for my 11-32 cassettes.

    calm down people 8)

it's true some (but not all) of the latest Shimano mechs can handle bigger sprockets - some short cages can go to 30t and so on - but you need to check the specs.

    Sram should be fine too.

But you said road mechs don't go up to 32t, even the long cage ones. That is quite blatantly wrong. It's no good now saying some are suitable for 32t and to check the specs to make sure.

Both the current gen (3500) mechs will take a 32T sprocket according to this:
    Boardman HT Team - Hardtail
    Rose Pro-SL 2000 - Roadie
