Is there a Shimano Ultegra 11 speed 11-30 cassette option?

Hi, having tanked in the recent Etap halfway up the Tourmelet with a Shimano compact and 11-28 cassette I decided to upgrade to an 11-30 but all I seem to be able to find is an 11-32 option for Shimano Ultegra 11 speed cassettes. This is not ideal as it jumps from 28 to 32, when what I really want is a 30. 11-30 seem readily available in the 10 speed cassettes but not 11. Appreciate I probably just need to man up! but wondered if anyone could point me the right direction on a cassette with a 30 sprocket that I can use with my Ultegra 11 speed setup?

The only option I'm aware of for a Shimano compatible 11 speed 11-30 is the SRAM 1190. It's eye-wateringly expensive though. You should consider two things; first is that a bailouts gear is just that and the jump is expected. Second is that the jump from 27-30 as compared to 28-32 is 1 tooth. Not really worth the money.

FWIW I have an 11-32 and don't find the jump the least bit bothersome, especially since if I'm in it I'm going up something 20%ish.

I'd just confirm what Grill says; by the time you get down to the bail-out gears, you're wanting / expecting the bigger jump, so it's not a problem in practice. For me it's only an issue if they've omitted a useful middle sprocket in order to fit the big ones; see what's happening in the middle of the cassette.

Thanks Gents, very helpful. Will check the middle sprockets to see how they compare and try the 32. As you say it is only there for when you need it and beats getting off and pushing!

I have the 11 speed 11-32. Can honestly say I never find the jump big enough!

Do you have a compact chainset already? ie 34t inner ring on the front?

I bought my first road bike in May and, because I felt the hills/mountains in the area were going to be too challenging for someone used to spinning MTB gears, I got my LBS in Florence, Italy to customize my 11s Ultegra 6800 cassette into a 11-30, by removing the 13 tooth cog and adding a 30. Removing the 13 is better than removing a lower speed gear which would be trickier to deal with when climbing. I was told that to fit a 32 I would probably have to forfeit the compact derailleur. The cassette is now 11-12-(13 removed)-14-15-17-19-21-23-25-28+30. Now I can keep up with my clubmates, or sprint uphill when the legs allow it. The only real issue is the obvious loss of a gear when riding at high speed.

I run a 52/36 semi compact chainring with an 11-31 11 speed cassette on a couple of my bikes, works fantastically for me but you do need to run a longer rear derailleur cage. The step from the 28 to 32 tooth sprocket is not an issue on the road.
Another bike has a compact with 11-28 cassette, I prefer the 52/36 11/32 combination.

Again, I've been using 11-32 and hadn't noticed the jump being too big - you're either dead on your feet or pulling involuntary wheelies when you use it. The one issue is that you'll probably get away with a short cage RD on 30 but you'll need a medium cage for 32 I think.

i recenty tried it. i am currenty using a 32t cassette with a short cage DA9000 RD. But i am also using a 33/46t chainset. So the chain isn't as stressed when on the 46t and on the larger cogs vs using a 50t outer. i can use all gears without noise except big/big. i have the b-screw half way in. So in some cases it does work. I think the length of your derailleur hanger will also play a part. Some are longer/shorter than others.

Interesting, what crankset and rings are you using?

FSA SLK Light crank with a (10 spd) Stronglight CT2 inner with a (10/11spd) Doval MGLR outer.
  • I run 11-32 on several bikes. I agree that the gap is no big deal. Its about 8rpm increase in cadence IIRC, so just enough to get me from grinding painfully to something manageable.
