cycle carrier for saloon car

I need to sort out a way of carring two bikes. I've got a saloon car without roof rack inserts so I'm not certain as to the best way forward here. I'm not even sure I've seen a carrier on a booted cat other than a tow bar fitment. (No, I don't have a tow bar and I'm not going to contemplate it due to cost).
So, any suggestions, opinions ? There must be something out there that isn't going to cost a fortune.

Plenty of rear mounted carriers. Saris Bones, Thule, or Halfords.
You can also put a roof rack on just about any car.
Again look at Thule.
