New wheel?

Good afternoon,
I have a Raleigh Spirit from the 80s (I think) which I used to ride a lot when I lived in Cambridge. However, the back wheel got bent, and I haven’t ridden it since. I wanted to get it back to working order but had a couple of questions, which you may be able to help me with.
Firstly, is it worth replacing both wheels?
Secondly, I really struggled to get to grips with the friction gearing (also because of the positioning of the shifters). As I need to replace the back wheel anyway, would this be a good opportunity to change to an indexed system, with changers on the handlebars?
Obviously I don’t want to spend too much on what is a nice but old bike, but with the availability of second hand parts, I was just curious.
Thanks ever so much for your time,
Steven

Sounds like you want to spend a lot of money on an old bike... not worth it... keep it as it is and replace the wheel with something second hand cheap and cheerfulleft the forum March 20230
