Steerer tube extender

Hi, I got a bike fit carried out on Friday and I have been advised to raise my bars by 30 to 40mm and use a stem 20mm shorter. I have replaced the 100mm stem with an 80mm and I have angled the bars up a little but this only raised the grips by 5 to 10mm. I bought the frameset secondhand and the steerer had been cut so I have no space to raise the stem. I see BBB sell a steerer tube extender http://www.wiggle.co.uk/bbb-bhp-22-stee ... -extender/
Are these any good? I'm doing a 7 day 850km cycle soon and I want to be comfortable on the bike.
Thanks

I don't think I could trust an extender with the abuse your fork and steering can take on bumpy roads.

You sound like you have got pretty close to where you say you need to be anyway. See how you get on with that setup

Sell the secondhand frameset and get another one secondhand that fits? Sounds like it's the wrong size AND the wrong kind of geometry for you. I assume the stem is already flipped too?

Just get a stem with more angle.

Oh it also helps to post a photo of the bike fit when asking these questions.

How many spacers do you have currently? Would a new fork have a long enough steerer?

Thanks for the info. The steerer tube was cut by the previous owner so I don't have much to play with. I might look at a 30 degree angled stem to give me a bit extra. It might be a safer bet than the steerer tube extender.
I'm planning on buying a better bike next spring so have my eye on the Canyon Endurace. My current bike is a Dolan Hercules SE. I missed out on a new fork with an uncut steerer tube on EBay recently.

Why not just buy a new set of forks? Available at Ribble etc.
  • New fork with uncut steerer is definitely the way to go, check ribble for this. Steerer extenders are visual death for any bike and you shouldn't go there.

And here's a stem comparison tool to help choose length and angle :-)

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to stick with the new shorter stem and not bother with stem extender. I've done a few long rides and the bike feels great. I angled the bars up slightly too and I don't feel stretched at all.
