Its a bit premature I know as I have only ridden bike 5 times but does anyone know how to check for wear on an 11 speed sram x11 chain, that is assuming my 9 speed chain checker is no use.

Just ride it until it dies and replace chain and cassette.

The cost of the cassettes make that a little hard to swallow.

Your existing chain checker will be fine, pitch of the chain is identical. FWIW, I've just changed my XX1 chain after just over 1000 miles, cassette is fine.

My experience is similar, change chains regularly and the cassette shouldn't wear too much. A friend of mine went through 5 chains and two sets of chainrings yet the red cassette (I know different but same construction and material) was as new!!!
