Advice needed picking beginner/campus bike

Hey everybody, I've been looking for a bike to get me into road biking but also to make a good campus bike. I'm on a college student budget so I can't really afford a brand new bike. I started checking out craigslist and found two good looking bikes in great condition. One is a Trek 300, the other a Cannondale 3.0 Aluminum Series. They're both listed at the same price and neither owner knows the year they were made. I've posted the links to the bikes below. Any advice or help identifying what year these bikes are would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Both have quill stems & DT shifters so I'm guessing early 90's? Just based on the pics I think the Cannondale looks the nicer bike (but so might a campus bike thief)

    Get a decent lock and use it.

    For a bike that's going to college I'd just be looking for something that I wouldn't be too fussed about being pinched.

    You both make good points, thank you! I do like the looks of cannondale better. I'm in the process of setting up times I can go ride them to see which one feels better. Thanks again for the input!
