Stages Powermeters still having issues?

I am thinking about buying a Stages Cycling Ultegra 6800 power meter, but have read on several forums in various posts about problems relating to batteries draining / O-ring seals etc.

I don't really want to throw away £700 so was wondering if any owners of these products on the forum can comment on whether this is still an issue or not?

I had one which initially had a calibration issue, Stages were brilliant in replacing it very quickly (despite there seemingly being no stock in the UK) and since then its worked perfectly.....would highly recommend it.

Absolutely no issues with mine after 4 or 5 months - simple and reliable, easy to calibrate and swap from bike to bike - I couldn't ask for anything more.

No issues with mine. Had it since February and have changed the battery. Ridden in all weathers.
  • I have a couple. One early, one later model. I was getting battery issues with the earlier one but the latest software upgrade seems to have solved those. I also emailed the importer who sent me a couple of new battery doors and later model seals (red) FOC.

Amazed that no one has come and slated them for only measuring one leg!

No problems with mine. Ridden it a fair bit - including through a thunderstorm in France and it was on the car roof for the journey down and it absolutely belted it down for 5 hours. Think it under-reads power though (no it doesn't, I'm just not as strong as I like to think I am!)

No issues here either - I've only had it 2 months mind but I've ridden through some crap weather. One torrential afternoon my Garmin and 2 of my mates (all 810s) all packed in because of the wet but the power meter worked OK (at least I assume it did as it worked with the new Garmin after that got replaced)

OP, is this the one you are interested in? I don't know what's what with all the little iterations of Ultegra. £415 he has dropped to.

Thanks for all the reports, good to hear something positive on forums for a change. It seems Stages have overcome there problems and have good customer service which is great, as I can't really justify spending £1000+ on a power meter currently.

mfin, Thanks for the tip off only thing is my cranks are currently 170 and not 172.5. I'm not sure what strange things that would do to me having one crank longer than the other, even though its a small measurement I'm guessing its probably not a good idea.

Not certain they have completely overcome the problems. My mate is on his second one, has updated the software and it's still munching batteries. He has tried several makes of battery, and the only way he can make a battery last is by removing it after every ride!
I have been considering a power meter and was hopeful about Stages, but it looks like Rotor LT might be worth a try.
  • I recommend Stages. L/R measurement not shown or even claimed by companies who offer it to have training value. Stages, PowerTap, Quarq, SRAM, Vector, power2max all perform to the level of accuracy and consistency almost all road cycling enthusiasts need for training and racing. Stages net cost, ease of use (torque-zero, calibration) transferability, breadth of compatibility better. All power meters (and I do mean all of them - Stages, PowerTap, Quarq, Vector, Pioneer, ROTOR etc.) have had reported issues when they first were introduced. Most, including Stages have resolved them. But most companies have incredible service (e.g. overnight replacement) if you have an issue.
