Need advice picking beginner/campus bike

Hey everybody, I've been looking for a bike to get me into road biking but also to make a good campus bike. I'm on a college student budget so I can't really afford a brand new bike. I started checking out craigslist and found two good looking bikes in great condition. One is a Trek 300, the other a Cannondale 3.0 Aluminum Series. They're both listed at the same price and neither owner knows the year they were made. I've posted the links to the bikes below.
