When mine has needed a decent clean in the past, I remove the chain from the bike and leave it to soak in some hot water and fairy liquid for about 10 mins. Then give it a good scrub with a tooth brush on both sides. Finally I'd spray some GT-85 all over it and wipe it down before putting it back on the bike and adding some lube.
It can take a little while if you want to make it super shiny but it works well and doesn't need doing that often. It's the cheapest and easiest way i found to do it at home with minimal equipment.
Nowadays I just use the parts washer at work which can clean a whole drivetrain in 10 mins but that's just a luxury I'm fortunate to have!0 -
Haha, true.. might be a good option i guess.. what lube do you use?0

Muc-off dry lube (bottle version, not spray) in the summer, and the wet version in the winter.0
