Places to stay around Bath

As per the title I'm looking to spend a few nights in the Bath area from the 18th August for two or three nights. Prefer pub accommodation rather than b& b or hotel. Bath seems a bit pricey so looking at the surrounding area, prefer it to be in one of the small towns like Bradford on Avon so we can have a choice of places to eat in the evening within walking distance. Anyone know the area and can come up with some suggestions?
Cheers

Do you want somewhere with character, or can you make do with a clean bed/shower/no frills? We stayed in the Travelodge in central Bath a while back. Obviously doesn't meet your brief for non-hotel, but the location was perfect (5min walk into town) and it was cheap. Might not be the worst compromise!
  • Don't know the area, but have you had a look here?

As Monkeypump says the Travel lodge is central. There are rooms availabe at the Universit of Bath

This is on top of the hill overlooking Bath but has regular buses (at some times every 10 minutes) to the centre. It's outside term time and the place is currently full of foreign students and tennis children.
If you are driving Bath is a pain for traffic. If you are looking for somewhere to ride surrounding area is pretty good; Cheddar to the South, Cotswolds North and South Wales to the West.
  • Cheers everyone, my wife has decided (!) that she doesn't want to actually stay in Bath but in one of the surrounding towns, pub or inn being the preferred option - not allowed to take the bike either :( !!

How about the Old Crown in Kelston? Should be quiet as the road that runs past it to Bath has been closed (a bit before Bath) for months due to a land slide and they could probably do with the money. Their fish and chips are nice. If you want to pop to Bath a private toll road (£2) was opened this week to go around the closed section.

That looks just the job, many thanks!
  • The bloke that has opened that toll road was on the radio this morning. He says that he needs 150,000 people to go through the toll road between now and Christmas just to break even!

What happens if you drive through without paying?
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles

Hire a camper van and stay in the car park by the weighbridge on J18 off the M4
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • Thanks for all the suggestions, managed to get a room in the Crown in Wells - looks nice and right by the Cathedral.

If you hear a small bell ringing it'll be the swans wanting feeding.

I think he was exaggerating to hide the fact that he is profiteering on the back of an unfortunate road closure. He was working on £1,000 per day running costs, even paying £10 an hour to someone to operate the toll booth and allowing for the £65 per week toll booth rental I don't see how he gets close and £150k construction costs sounds high for a 400m long temporary road across a private field.
