What upgrade parts do I need?

Hi all,

This is my first post, so hello :)

I have a 2010 Specialised Secteur Triple, which I really like, its a nice comfortable frame and generally the bike fits my needs.

For most of the time I've had the bike it has suffered from a problem of a creaking noise from the crank area.
I firstly replaced the BB, which seemed to fix the problem temporarily, but it returned. I then replaced the pedals with SPD-SL pedals, which again fixed the problem only for a while.
I've come to the conclusion the problem. Is the crank, its the only option left.

The thing is, I don't really want to replace the crank with another 2300 crank, as if I'm going to change it, I'd rather have a double rather than a triple crank. After recently riding a a 105 double-10 setup, having all the mid to high speed gears on one cog works much better, I constantly have to shift from the middle to the top on mine and the wide cassette combined with the triple makes some gears a bit horrible to get into.

My question is, what do I 'have' to change to get a double-10 setup on mine, with a hollow crank BB? (I'm not a fan of the square taper).
Obviously I can replace the whole groupset, but at £325 its not cheap and I'm pretty happy with my callipers and even my thumb shifters. I'm assuming I can't keep my existing rear shifter (currently 8 speed) with a new 10 speed cassette?
However I'm guessing I can use my triple front shifter to shift a double? Just adjust the end stops...

Just trying to work out what I need to buy, without replacing things which I don't have a problem with. All I really want to do is change the crank and if I'm going to do that, upgrade to what I'd prefer....

Cheers,

Alex

Are you sure it's not your foot rubbing against the crank arm? Mine does that and it sounds like something else creaking.

New front derailleur and new left hand shifter. Ohh and a new crank ofc.

You're right about using the triple shifter as a double.
Adjust the limit screws appropriately and use the middle-small ring shift as the redundant shift, that way you're only releasing cable tension when you shift to the spare one, instead of trying to snap the cable if you have middle-big as the spare.

Positive. I think it's the actual crank n on the square taper, hence I want to go to hollow crank.

I was positive I had a creaky crank, turned out to be the stem/bars creaking as I pulled on the pedal stroke

5800 - 105 has just come on the market, buy that, 11 speed and future proof.

Check your back wheel for 11sp compatibility before buying.

Yeah, I saw that the 11 speed was going to come out, but tbh I'm not hugely worried, the 10 speed has a good range...

What I'm really after is info about compatibility and what I have to upgrade to do this?

Can I fit a double-10 setup on my existing bike with the existing shifters? Do I just change the rear shifter.... Can I keep the present rear derailer?

What is the difference in wheels that may mean I can't fit the 10 speed cassette?

Crank, BB and cassette is only £110 ish so not a big deal and changing that is what I want really, its all the other stuff that costs loads and I'm not sure if I can get away with not doing it?
