I have been riding ss for the past few years I love the simplicity.
I need gears to ride with others, I am getting dropped.
Like the idea of 1 x 5 but do not consider this practical due to jumps between cogs. This makes me think I would like 1x9 or 1 x 10. I have built up strength and developed technique so I could ditch the granny ring Currently running 34 16 on a 26er. I do not want to loose the strength I have gained so wary of running much smaller gearing than I already have. Much of my riding involves roads to get between off road routes.
Does a 42 x 11- 25 on a 26er sound ok?

That gearing sounds sensible for what you want, of course you can fit any cassette you like and just index out the lowest gears anyway.
Why not go for an 8 speed cassette, stronger chain and less likely to derail and you can pick up reasonable quality 8 speed bits for not much money.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
