Chain length question

Toying with the idea of switching to a 1x10 set up which will mean changing chainrings and cassette.
I'm currently running a 38t outer chainring and 32t largest sprocket. If I switch to a 34t chainring and 36t largest sprocket, will I get away with using the same chain? I'm taking 4 teeth off the chainring and adding 4 teeth to the sprocket which, in my mind, cancels each other out.
Is it that simple, or am I missing something?

I'd be getting a new chain too and then just measure and cut it to length"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

yeah, that's the safest bet but I'm trying to do it on the cheap. Would be an excuse to see what a gold chain looks like on it, though.0

Assuming the chain length is right now, it will still be right.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
