Good fitting shorts

Got some black padded lycra Altura cycling shorts but the fit is terrible, they are a size 10 (I'm an 8/10) but the waist in tiny (but fits) but the bottom area n pad is massive! yet the elastic hem at the bottom of each leg is also really tight, fine for size 0 legs or a stick insect!! also have to pull them right up (practically under your chin) so they fit where they should in the crotch area lol

So unless you've got a shape like Jessica Rabbit I doubt they'd fit anyone!

Any recommendations?

Thanks

Yep try a few different brands on as they all (ish) have different fits. Also buy bib shorts - they make look a bit odd but they do make sense.

  • I have found that Endura shorts are pretty good in terms of fit, they have a great Chamois too (available from most high st bike shops). It sounds like we are a similar size... 8/10 but have sporting thighs... so don't like the hem on the thigh to be tight, making me look like some kind of weird sausage woman. DHB (from Wiggle) are also good, and have some good value kit that won't break the bank either. Both shorts and bib shorts.

If you want to spend more then Rapha, and Chapeau! do some great women's shorts. I can vouch for both if you are looking for shorts for long hours in the saddle.

Shorts tend to be a bit random and it can take a while to find some that fit your body shape. My wife is 5ft2 and a size 10/12. She found the Womens Gore shorts fitted very well being a slim build (Not size 0 !!) but you may find different. If you look around they are on sale at the moment from quite a few places, as well as other brands. I have found if you want to cycle a lot it is best to buy good quality shorts if possible rather than making do with cheaper ones. I just wait for the sales to buy them.

Rapha are the favourite here (Assos were but Rapha have the edge). Rapha also come with a 30 day return policy. Unfortunately it's trial and error with shorts/saddles but you could ring Rapha for sizing advice and order 2 pairs/different sizes with a view of returning one pair unworn

Thank you for your comments/advice, I'm not alone....that's all I needed to know lol

I prefer to try and buy at a shop rather than ordering online and returning things but we don't always have that choice I know.

I'll have to have a gander in Evans perhaps and see if they have a selction to try on, Halfords don't but then I already knew they wouldn't, silly really, you'd think they would offer more choice on their clothing range seen as it so easy to just pop to your local store, I know there not as specialised as a good cycling shop when it comes to clothing and bikes etc but you'd expect a few brands and more choice hung on the clothing rail.

    Ok, search continues :D
