Cheap light or carbon mountain bike for off road/canal etc?

I'm after a mountain bike for the canal etc, something light, one I have now is a beast, anyone recommend one or a good make, carbon or very light indeed.

    Budget? The more you spend the less it'll weigh. If you just want to ride towpaths and such though I'd look at a cyclocross bike or hybrid, they'll be significantly lighter.
