Lack of commitment..

Im toying with the idea of switching from 2 x10 to 1 x 10, just to give it a try. Im not commited to the idea enough to fork out tons off cash yet and was wondering about a conversion on the cheap to give it a try. Any comments on this proposal please - I currently have a 2 x 10 sram X7 setup I was thinking to swap the smaller front ring from a 24 to a 32 and remove the front mech and on the rear I have access to a 42t expander ring. I am thinking that this should be enough to give the system a try. I am sure I would need a chain guide and bash ring in due course but does this sound a plausible route for a try out? Im mostly riding trails and surrey hills, nothing too extreme.

Fit a 32 in place of the larger ring (unless you have a crankset that isn't 104mm BCD) as it will be more stable.
No need for an expander ring at the rear for most riding, just use an 11-36 cassette.
Use your front mech as a chain guide for now, just remove shifter and cables, you only need a bash if you are going to bash things (I do!) remembering that for mild hits the chainwheel will have a protective chain round it, not like hitting the teeth unprotected.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
I kept my 11 36 casette and started with a 32 T in the front and that will easily cope with what your activity is based around. Now up to 36 T at the front.
May be an idea to get nw ring at the front - just helps - I guess that your rear mech is not a type 2 - with a clutch and so the additional retention of nw may be helpful.
BTW - sorry - I gave away my 32 and 34 nw yesterday.
...and watch the chainline....take your pickelf on your holibobs....
