    The cage would be if the pivot mount wasn't seized in that picture...

    According to the guide you linked to, this is adequate.

    That's maybe one link out. Not worth it, my chain is perfectly fine as it is. Why make it any shorter?

    A shorter chain makes for a bigger angle on the lower section. This can increase noise and wear. As long as possible is better.
