Newbie trying to size & spec PlanetX/Ribble etc

I'm a newbie and seen lots of recs to go for PlanetX, Ribble and other online only bikes as great value for money.
But what about the test riding issue, which I can't see any way around.
Also, how the hell do I know what to do about speccing and sizing them? Does this all mean that really these bikes are not great for newbies, much better for those with experience of what components they want? I know that Planet X for example have stores up north, but I'm SE based with no plans for a trip to Sheffield any time soon.
Just to be clear - I'm not knocking them as bikes, I'm questioning their suitability for newbies.
thanks

They both have stores that you can visit to try the bikes, give them a call for some info. In the south Triathlon Zone in St Albans do PX.0

Pretty sure Geoffrey Butler in Croydon stock them also..0

I've never been near Ribble's shop but have two of their bikes.
The first I slightly oversized but it got me started without problems.
The 2nd is ride all day comfortable.
Do your rsearch and you should manage it.0 -
Thanks all. Will go to Triathlon Zone and take a look/try one out. Really don't fancy buying unseen.0
