Shorts - off the bike

I've always cycled but recently I've really ramped up my distance.
I went shopping for shorts and I didn't manage to find any that fit. I'm 5'7", size 10. But I found the size 10s were just too tight. In the first shop I put it down to small sizing, by the third shop I had got the hint. I started taking a 12 into the changing room with me and they were huge around the waist. I tried various different styles from different shops but I didn't have any joy. All I'm after is some casual shorts that aren't too short (I.e. Not hot pants).
I don't particularly care what size I wear, I've never been one for weighing myself etc. But I would like to find some shorts that don't look obscenely tight or so loose around the waistband that I look like a builder. Thanks.

Different brands of shorts tend to fit differently.You may have to try a few to get the fit you need.0
