Hi All
I am brand new to this road biking lark I have had a road bike for a year now and have just bought a cyclocross bike as well for some light trail riding and use on rough canal toe paths near Chester where i live.
My question is do i really need 2 pairs of shoes for the different bikes. as i am looking to replace my road bike shoes and would need a pair for the new bike as well if i could not get away with only one pair.

Thanks in advance.

Carl.

Difficult to advise without knowing what type of riding you do and what type of pedals you currently have.

I have the road bike style pedal( not expensive) on my road bike with the 3 hole cleat in my shoes. I am working in Barrow in furness Cumbria i ride to work every day from my lodgings and take a long route home if the weather is good the roads are very hilly and my milage is normally between 10 to 30 miles a day .My cyclocross bike will have XTR spd pedals as i will need the grip on the shoes as the trails i will be riding require me to carry the bike for short distances to reach different parts of the trails.
As i am going to get new shoes for my road bike ,if i get a expensive pair i would change my bike pedal to a SPD to match the cyclocross bike if that is ok to do .I am not sure if waring MTB shoes on a road bike is the done thing or even should be done still very new to all this .

SPD pedals on a road bike are quite acceptable to most people however you may find that the cross shoes are not as stiff as your road shoes.

Slightly different suggestion for you. Do you really need to replace your road bike shoes immediately? Mine tend to last until I get bored with them rather than them wearing out!

You will definitely have to get a pair of shoes for your new trail bike and, as you say, these will have to suit spd pedals. I think you will find that you can get light weight and stiff soled spd shoes. They may not be technically as light and stiff as the best road shoes but really, for commuting particularly, I would suggest you'll want slightly more durable shoes than uber lightweights. Have a look in a few decent bike shops - I think you will be pleasantly surprised. There are loads of folks who use and prefer spds on their road bikes - just try not to get lumbered with too clunky a pair and you'll be fine.

Hi thanks for the last 2 suggestions .
I think i need to replace my road shoe as i am getting a lot of foot pain after approximately 45mins to an hour of riding
my shoe was a bottom range scott shoe and even when velcro tight my feet move around in them under load.

I will look into the Shimano touring shoe and see what takes my fancy . Think i need to go and try a few pairs on and take some advice on fitment to make sure i don't waste my money.

Thanks again guys much appreciated ..

    Carl.
