I've been looking at these for weeks and now its time to buy.

Does anyone have first hand experience of both to be able to compare them?

I'm not sure I will need the maps although its a nice feature to have plus I actually think the 810 looks better with the edge detailing on the unit. Of course its also a good bit more expensive, especially when buying one with the European map pack.

Which one should I go for?

  • If you don't need the maps, go for the 510 and save some money. You could still follow routes you design in your computer on the 510, the only difference being that while on the 810 you'll see the complete map and route, in the 510 you'll only see the route as a black line.

If you go for the 810 don't buy it with maps. Get the free maps available on the internet. See the DC Rainmaker site for detailed comparisons.

Or there's the Touring Plus which will display HR if paired with a suitable HRM. Comes with pretty detailed Eur mapping installed (and it updates the maps when syncing with the Garmin site) Plus it behaves more like a sat-nav.

It still records your rides and uploads them to Garmin Connect so you can see where you went, how fast, how high, how hot / cold and how tachycardic.

Less of a training tool though - (Won't display cadence, and it won't chat to your mobile phone / upload stuff wirelessly. Can't program workouts / intervals / HR zones and there's no virtual partner etc)

Thanks for the replys, it has to show cadence etc so it will be one of the 2.

I'll take a look into the costs minus buying the maps and take it from there, if its not that much more I think I'll just go for the 810

Niether, go with the Mio 505HC, it's £250 from www.box.co.uk and comes pre bundled with European maps, mount, HR & speed / cadence.

If you want maps but don't need Livetracking (which Garmin seems to have sorted out now), go with the 800. If you do want maps and Livetracking, go with the 810. If you don't want maps then it's either the 500 or the 510. The 1000 is the latest offering and expensive. And as someone kindly pointed out to me when I considered upgrading, you can assign specific ring tones and SMS tones to individual contacts to recognise who is calling texting, and decide whether you need to stop to answer instead of upgrading to a device that displays the information.

I had a look at the mio but it didn't review well enough to consider in the end.

I do like the idea of the 1000 but its a lot of cash and verging on too large for the bike I feel.

In the end I have went for the 510 bundle as wiggle price matched it to 220 so for me that was too good a deal to pass up

Shame you didn't try Handtec as they're doing newly overhauled 800s for £161.

I would prefer brand new over noh, it was handtec I originally found the 510
for 226 and wiggle wouldn't match them.

For me it was the 510/810 as I like the extra live tracking and wireless upload idea- I know the 800 is still considered one of the best units but its not for me.

    Thanks for the suggestion though

NOH isn't anything bad. They're devices which have been returned from stock or by customers who had problems. In a majority of cases there is naff all wrong with the device with the customer doing something wrong which I've been guilty of myself with my first 810. You'll get the same warranty as "brand new" and the same consumer rights.
