I am looking to buy a new set of wheels as my current ones are ancient and probably made of granite. They will be my only wheels and so they need to be durable enough to put up with the rough roads of the peaks all year but also be reasonably light so I can race on them (amateur racing for University of Cambridge). At the moment my favorites are 2014 Fulcrum Racing 5's, I was also looking at the 2014 mavic aksium s . Oh I should also mention my budget is 150 - 200. Any experiences would be appreciated.

  • Is that 150-200 for 1 or a pair?
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles

Avoid the askiums (well new ones anyway cheap second hand one are a better option), the rear is a flexy wheel. Better of with the fulcrums or the cheaper Shimano R500.

There's been some £225 deals recently on Zondas. If you can still get a deal like that and we're considering Racing 5's then spend the extra £25 and get Zondas.

Thanks for the replies. The reaseon I am keen on the fulcrum's is that I can get a pair of 2014 wheels for £165 on 'bike-discount.de'.

mfin - where can you get zonda's for £225? Will they be as strong as fulcrum 5's, the front zonda looks fairly weak?

I think for the money the fulcrum racing 5's look to be a good deal

Zondas and Fulcrum 3s are basically the same wheels. Campag own Fulcrum and the wheels are apparently made in the same factory.

Racing 5s are the Ventos I think.

You can get the older Ventos in a G3 spoke pattern for £112: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/campagnolo-vent ... -wheelset/

Save more, get hopes with alpha rims. ~£323 but both light, stiff, easy to repair, and durable

Sorry to hijack but I'm after some new wheels as well with the same budget and not worth starting a new thread...

Have a bog standard Allez 2014 on route and want to change wheels and tyres for now. Saw the £112 campag wheels, are they a decent improvement over the AXIS wheels that come with the Allez? Knowing Specialized, the AXIS wheels are probably uber shite?

Worth going for the wiggle deal or some Zondas instead?

What about Chinese carbons from Aliexpress?

If you are interested in the Ventos but don't like the G3 lacing, Merlin have the equivalent fulcrum racing 5s at a decent price.

Are they better than the Axis wheels? Probably, yes. But don't expect a huge change - best bang for the buck is decent tyres and tubes. If you're looking at Zondas, look at hand-builts too.

Yeah, I'm planning on dumping the standard tyres and getting some mich pro4 standard course?

I'll be looking to swap to 105 10/11spd in the next year from 8spd Claris if I end up enjoying road cycling (im an MTB'er) so will need new tyres as the AXIS Classic are just 8spd from what I understand?
