I'm currently using a Planet X Pro Carbon in this glorious weather were having..... :D

I've just sold my Giant Defy 3 which I used over last winter, so I'm on the lookout for a bike for the forthcoming winter, thought I'd better start looking now.

Any ideas ????

Ideally you'd want summat that you could fit mudguards to, like a ribble winter bike, a dolan preffisio or PX kaffenback. Personally, I'd avoid sora or below and go for at least tiagra or SRAM Apex/rival as I think that they wear better and feel nicer.

Or sit on ebay for the next couple of months for a 2nd hand charge juicer or genesis croix de fer.

Alternatively, you could build something up yourself a 105 groupset from Merlin is £300, a frame from ebay for a couple of hundred, some miche wheels for £150 etc etc

I'm looking for similar and am quite interested in the Whyte Sussex, Dorset or Suffolk pending on how much I can save between now and October (the Sussex is £799). All have disc brakes, plenty of room for racks and mudguards and 28 tyres

Good shout. Whyte have just this week released details of their expanded 2015 range. Hopefully this means there'll be some decent discounts coming up soon on the 2014 models.

Why did you sell the defy, they make pretty good winter bikes.

I had a cunning plan for a replacement that didn't happen

Planet X Pro Carbon as the 'new' winter bike and a sparkly new best summer bike would be my choice (with a bigger budget) :D

Nice idea, no room for guards and more to the point SWMBO would not approve, as I used that reason to replace the last bike :)

+1 to the Dolan Pref (same frame as the Ribble I think). Ok with 23mm tyres and guards, 25 would be a bit tight I reckon (not that I've tried on mine). Also Ambrosio Guido - takes long drop brakes so would take 28mm tyres.

I'd steer clear of the Kaffenback (I still have the frame from mine), none of the brake options work well IMO.

I run 25mm 4seasons on my Prefissio with guards. It's very tight but do-able

    Cannondale Synapse Alloy.

OK, it comes with Claris but this is perfectly serviceable for a winter bike. Big clearances and deep drop brakes. Most importantly a BSA threaded BB. Normally around £650

Might be able to spec up a Kinesis for that much or find a one built up with Tiagra in a sale?

Could buy a frame and build it up? Something like a Forme Longcliffe, Tifosi CK7/CK3 or Genesis Aether.

Paul Milne have a decent selection on The Bay.

Last year I bought a brand new Lapierre Cross bike with 105 for £700. I changed the tyres for 28xGatorskins and it was faultless in all the crap weather we had.

If I were you...I'd get a cross bike.

Big discounts on Boardmans right now - 20% or so until Monday I believe. Great value and rarely discounted that heavily
