Hi

I'm looking at upgrading my tyres on my Sectuer bike (road bike with disc brakes) which currently has 700x28C.
I'm mainly a commuter (18 miles/daily x5) and cycle at the weekend...

I'm looking for high puncture resistance but good performance.

Whats the difference between Continental GatorSkin Road Wire Bead Tyre & Continental GatorSkin Folding Road Tyre, which is better over the other?

    Big H

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
  • As OnYourRight said, it is a trade-off between puncture protection and rolling resistance. If puncture protection is your priority, take a look at these schwalbe http://goo.gl/hQYtqX. If you're looking for a more "balanced" tire, go for the gatorskin http://goo.gl/zWPjBd

    A 350 gram tyre isn't a trade off.

    Forget gatorskins and look elsewhere.

A tire with good puncture resistance is something you'll notice(i.e. no flats). A tire with lower rolling resistance is something you won't notice.

What tyres do you currently use and how often do you puncture?
Puncture susceptibility seems to vary wildly. Probably depending on the roads you ride, the pressures you use and how you hit potholes. If I remember correctly I've had 4 punctures in 3.5 years at about 5000km per year. I used gatorskin hardshells for 18 months approx then switched to Conti 4 seasons and now use Mavic Yksion (came with the wheels). The 4 seasons had one puncture in a year and a half. Better than the gatorskins but not statistically significant the figures were so low on both. However, I did prefer the feel of the 4 seasons. I've done about 1400km on the Yksions now and have not had a puncture yet and these are lightweight race tyres. If you don't already have puncture problems, go for a comfy and grippy ride. If you do have a puncture problem then consider compromising the ride for protection. Now that I've tried others I wouldn't go back to gatorskins. At the time I thought they were fine.
  • I've got the tyres that came with the bike ( specialized secteur road discs) after 1600 miles I've had a few punctures, I'm thinking of the Conti 4 seasons as I use my bike daily.

Thanks for the feedback guys :-)

GP 4 Seasons are a good tyre for commuting and general road use.
