Pedals - easier to get into (and out of) than Shimano

I've been riding my Felt Z95 since about November, my first road bike and my first time clipped in.

I went for Shimano 540 pedals and RO78 shoes. The right pedal has developed an annoying click and I can't seem to resolve it, so I'm probably going to get a new set of pedals. I'm getting better at clipping in the pedals, but still stutter sometimes when pulling away, and find clipping out a bit difficult at times, especially on an uphill (yes, I have fallen).

I don't really want to spend silly money as the bike isn't exactly high end, but are there any other types of pedals that are easier to clip into, and out of - potentially Look? As I have three bolt shoes MTB pedals aren't an option, and I do like the feel of the SPD SL combo when clipped in.

Thanks in advance.

I'd highly recommend Speedplay zeros but they're a bit more expensive. You may find the chrome moly version for about £100

I use these & they are very easy to clip in & out of. Unfortunately, they're not adjustable so you can't tighten then up when youre ready.
    There is no secret ingredient...

Look keo are idiot proof. Some folk moan about the cleats wearing out quickly but if you don't go jogging in your cycling shoes they'll last years.

Is that an issue? I may try these and run them for a year until I upgrade my road bike in any case.

Speedplay Light Actions maybe, if you have trouble clipping in and out. Cost typically £85 for a good deal

Get look Keo classic which are adjustable. If you don't mind red they're cheap at Ribble http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-t ... tAod3iAALQ

Is red not related to the amount of float, I thought that was how look worked.

The speedplays suggested are too expensive really, the bike was only £440! Maybe when I upgrade.

No, that's the colour of the cleats that relates to the float. This is just the colour of the pedals and the only thing to be concerned about is whether they match your bike!

Get the classis if you are going keo, they are not much more expensive and its better to have the adjustment to tighten if you need it. The easy tension setting is the same as the classic tension set at its lowest, the bearings are the same.
I have the easy, its the only clipless pedal my LBS stocks. I have never unintentionally clipped out with these pedals so even if i had the classis's the setting would still be on the lowest setting but if i was clipping out i would have to replace the pedals.

You should be able to fit MTB cleats to your shoes.

I'm another one to recommend Look Keo pedals. I've got the grey cleats that have a fair amount of float. Nice and easy to clip in and out of. I've got 105 pedals on one of my bikes, the Look are so much easier to clip out of.
My only complaint is that the pedal can occassionally spin around too easy making clipping the second leg in a bit of a faff, but to be fair this isn't very often and is more likely to be user error!
I've had these for well over a year, I'm on my second set of cleats, they do wear down if you walk on them, but one set a year isn't too bad.

I've gone for them from Ribble in red, there are a few red bits on my bike, and red parts make you go faster, so I'll give them a go.

    Cheers all.

Just a small thing. Get going before you clip in. A mate who is new to clipless insists on making one stroke with his clipped foot then try to clip the other as it reaches the top. He is barley moving and still wobbling. Just one more turn increases your speed and makes things so much easier. Moving is safe and if you do wobble when pulling off you have a free foot.

I've found both my pairs of Looks to creak. I prefer time, for easy entry and exit but firm when you need them to be

I am moving, uphill starts can be an issue still though, and flat or downhill can take a few tries. Sometimes it works first time and instinctively just clicks in.

Thanks for the link Escher303; I've just fitted them this morning and they are ace. Clipping both in and out is much easier than the Shimano's, cleats are much lower profile and nicer to walk in.

The annoying click has gone too, so it was the pedals.

I have moved to Look from Shimano. Cheaper, easier to engage and lighter. I can't say for sure as the swap is recent but the Shimano's look and appear bullet proof compared to the looks though.
