UK sizing in lycra shorts?

Seeing as my arse is about to fall clean off, I'm going to have to get a pair of padded shorts to go under my regular shorts.
I'm a 36 waist in jeans, shorts, trousers etc, and I know that sizing will likely vary from brand to brand, but can anyone tell me what size might be a good place to start looking?
36" usually equates to a XL in regular kecks, but I was worried that buying XL in lycra may leave me with a Felix style pair I could also use as a windbreak or 4 man tent.
