Hi everyone,

I'm about to get a new bike and I'm down to my final 2 choices. I currently ride a 2013 Giant Defy Composite 1 and am looking to get something a bit sportier. I am either going to get a BMC SLR01 Ultegra 2014 with upgraded Dura Ace wheels or a Cannondale Supersix Evo HM Racing Red 2014.

Has anyone out there got either of these two bikes? If so, what are your thoughts after having ridden them for a little while? Both bikes get a good a write up and seem to be pretty similar.

At the moment, I'm leaning slightly towards the BMC, as this would give me a spare pair of wheels (the stock ones) for winter.

Any advice would be well received. Thanks. :)

Get the BMC, it is much more interesting :)
    Red bikes are the fastest.

Not ridden the Cannondale but the BMC is awesome and surprisingly comfortable. Junes edition of Cycling Plus had a shoot out of 12 pro level machines, including both of the Cannondale and the BMC and the winner was the BMC but there wasn't much in it.

I ride an SLR01 (old model) and it's a great bike. Couldn't be happier. The new model is meant to be awesome, one of the best bikes you can buy.

The cannondale looks fab too. But, and it's a big but, it has a BB30 bottom bracket so that would rule it out in my book. Go for the BMC.

I haven't ridden the BMC, but I own both the evo hi mod and the defy composite, and I actually prefer the defy composite. The press fit BB30 should be subject to strict manufacturers tolerance, however in some evo frames I don't think the tolerance is achieved and the bottom bracket starts to creak circa 1000 miles after fitting. Suffice to say bike fit is a key issue - the evo geometry does not suit all riders.
  • Thanks for all your comments guys.

I'm definitely edging towards the BMC. It's just such a big purchase that I want to be 100% confident before I take the plunge. I've emailed Evans to see if they can do a deal if I bought the Dura Ace wheels with the bike, but have heard nothing back from them yet. :?

What is the problem with the BB30 on the Cannondale? Do they need changed often? Noisy?

If I could only ever buy one top level bike in my life I would have absolutely no hesitation buying the BMC. It is that good.

Have you ridden a SS Hi-Mod?

Some people have no problems with the BB30 - bottom bracket is machined to appropriate tolerance, some people have no issues servicing the bottom bracket. My experience is that the press fit bb30 - as opposed to bb30 - the bottom bracket starts to creak after a certain number of miles (circa 1000 miles). I prefer the Shimano press fit system employed by Giant/Scott etc which in my experience last much longer (x3 or x4 longer).

Tried a supersix evo, and own a bmc slr01.

They are not dissimilar, but the BMC is just a little better in all the departments. It certainly climbs better. It definitely descends better. And its bump damping and comfort is far superior.

Also BB86 is a better (for me at least) BB standard than BB30.

If you are on a budget the SLR02 is very similar, though slightly heavier.

Also if the model you are after is the Ultegra one, the wheels are ok but nothing special. Good for training on.

It flies with zipp 303’s or c24’s on….
  • Thanks philbar72.

Yeah, the plan is to put some DA c24s on it. I'm just scouring the net for an Evans Discount code.... I'm struggling!!!

Leave it too long and they'll sell out in your size....

  • If that's what happens.... then that's what happens; I'll just wait for the 2015 version. As I say, I'm still riding my Giant at the minute so don't have to rush. I'm pretty certain they won't be changing the frame next year as it was only released last year.
  • There's a Supersix Evo Hi Mod sat here in the office, looks really nice with ENVE kit and 11spd Dura Ace. Weighs just over 5kg too!

That's all I can say - it's too big for me to really test it!

Both are ridden at pro level, and both receive steller reviews, i think, as has been said, fit and heart are likely to be better choosing factors.

Just out of interest how do these wheels compare on this bike?
