simple chain question

I'm going to 1 by 10 and so along with a narrow wide chainring and a cassette expander I've order a new chain to ensure proper meshing - even though the bike isnt that old so shouldn't be too worn. Chains seem to have got way more complicated than i remember! I'm running a SRAM drivetrain so it's got the power lock.
For the old chain, if I can't pull apart the powerlock I just break it with a chain tool they way i used to yes?
For the new chain I attach using the power lock, but what if i want to change the chain length by removing links, do I do that by the power lock or in a random place in the middle of the chain to avoid the power lock? is it easy to get the powerlock link in and out of the chain if it best to remove links adjacent to the powerlock?
