freewheel issue

Good evening all
Got my MTB out today to go for a ride, i put the bike against the fence to shut the gate then the bike slipped down. Has i set off i could hear a noise as if something was catching on my rear wheel, so after 4 miles i went back home to look at this and to see if i could find where the noise was coming from.
Has i was checking the bike over something didn't seem right, but i could be wrong as i don't know much about bikes, i peddled the bike by hand to see where the noise was coming from. i stop peddling to see if noise was coming from the peddles or the wheel, i believe the noise was coming from the rear wheel but what i also saw was the rear wheel didn't freewheel very long it seem to sluggish.
Is there something wrong with the bearing or the hub etc.
This may be a draft question but as i peddled backwards a little the chain dropped into another gear is this normal.
