Hi as title states Im a new member and recently reborn cyclist after not riding since my teens almost 30 years ago.
Wife decided in march she wanted a bike to go out with friends whod got bikes on cycle2work scheme. I doubted that would happen so I decided to get a bike aswell so we could encourage each other. We didnt want to spend too much incase we didnt take to it so she got a very cheap n nasty Apollo Elusion and I got a Carrera Valour. Weve both taken to it in a big way so shes wanting a better bike already and is going to see a Specialized Myka mtb today. Im starting to think Id like to upgrade aswell.
When we started we thought wed mainly be doing woods and tracks around where we stay but Im finding that myself especially is doing more roads and cycle paths so Im considering a Specialised Crosstrail Sport Disc.
My question really is will I find a great benefit in going to hybrid for this type of cycling over a 26" MTB?

In my experience (moving from a 26" MTB to a 700c CX bike), once on roads the 700c wheels, and a slicker tyre make road work so much more pleasurable.
You do miss a little of the front suspension, on rough grass/mud tracks, but I found I got used to that pretty quickly.
Looking at the crosstrail, it's more MTB than road bike anyway as you get to keep the suspension. You will lose a little speed due to the slightly heavier weight, and front suspension on road, but that may well be traded off against a smoother off road experience.
I would recommend a test ride if possible.0
