Hi Gents,

Im the guy that said he would never ride an bike "its an electric motor bike with pedals!" I said.

Well in February they found a brain tumour, I've had it removed and lost the use of my left side. I slowly getting it all back and my arm is pretty much 100% but my left leg still aint playing ball.

So here I am eating my words.

If you own an bike or know somebody that owns an bike, then Id love like to know which ones are best.

Ive been looking at the Scott range and tested the pedal assisted ones. Unbelievable machines - definitely motor bikes - but thank god, cause its gonna get me back on the trail.

Thanks in advance

    Fair play.

I know some people sniff at them, think it's cheating etc but from what I've heard these bikes can go anywhere and do pretty much anything a trail bike can do. And even if you weren't injured, who exactly are you cheating if you're having fun?

Dirt Moutain Bike Magazine did an article a while back, I can't find the full version, but there's a version here that may be of interest

Anyway, good luck in your search and I hope you love it.

Sorry to hear that but glad you're on the road to recovery.

There was a good write up on the Cube Stereo 140mm Hybrid E-Bike in Dirt #147. They're getting fairly common over here. Great for tourists as you don't need to be super fit to explore the mountains. Good luck

Sorry to hear your news but good that things appear to be going in the right direction.

My brother has a Haibike xDuro NDURO RX 26 Gen 2 which he got from e-bikeshop in Farnham, Surrey so not a million miles from you and very helpful so maybe worth a look.

Like you I was always skeptical of electric assisted bikes but I've ridden my brothers bike and it's bloody amazing and like you say if it gets you on the trails again who cares what others think

Good luck with the recovery :D

Thanks gents, who knew there were so many options!

That EMS is a trip! More of a motorbike than a Ebike! I don't think the boys at Swinley would appreciate me zipping around on it! :)

I think the pedal assist ones are more my sort of speed. I don't wanna get to lazy.... "he says while browsing for Ebikes"

I tested the Scott today its amazing piece of kit. Makes sitting at 16mph super easy...obviously, but achieving anything more than that feels like the brakes kick in because the motor completely cuts out and then its all about peddling a behemoth!

Its tough to be objecting coming off the back of far superior super light bikes. But lets see how the Cube goes.

    Its gonna

Rode the Haibike xDuro on the weekend. While it's definitely not for me I was still impressed with the way it climbs - it absolutely pelts up hill! The first few times you do it it takes you by surprise and would put a smile on anyone's face. Disregarding the electric motor side of things, I'm not sure it's that good a bike in its own right so, even if I was minded to get one, I don't think I could bring myself to spend that much on a merely O.K. bike when the same money could buy me something amazing sans motor. But as a way of getting someone with reduced mobility back out on the trails, it's a pretty good proposition. It is odd, though, almost putting your back out every time you lift it to reposition.

  • If you've already got a decent bike with a 68mm or 73mm bottom bracket then have a think about converting it with one of these:-

    Here's mine:-

That's a 48v500w with a 63v battery though - so peaks at 1000watts - not legal - but I've never had any bother and I don't ride like a d**k so as to not draw undue attention (other than overtaking everything on the climbs obviously!).
