Hi guys

Just wondering what is your average speed. I normally average about 12mph (age 15) and live in a really hilly area. I ride an aluminium road bike (Carrera Zelos)

Also what pressure do you set your tyres to?
- Are you more or less likely to get a puncture with a higher tyre pressure?
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of a higher pressure?

Just wondering what pressure would you recommend for me?
- Weight: 55ish KG
- Area has lots of speed bumps, roads arent smooth, quite a lot of small pot holes and cracks
- 700cc X 23cc Road Bike out the box tyres

Depends on your tyres. My gp4000s tyres run 100psi max and I weigh 75kg + 8kg bike.

Don't inflate to the Max pressure listed on your tyres.

For you, as a guess.. about 90psi + will be fine.

Some people pump their tyres up unnecessarily hard because for some reason they think they have to suffer, or because they think it will make them go faster. Look up a chart for body weight and tyre size (eg Sheldon Brown), but 100psi should be plenty; 90-95 should also be ok. Don't pay too much attention to the recommended or max pressures.

As for average speeds, there is limited worth in the conversation, as it depends so heavily on terrain, road and environmental conditions, distance and intensity (etc). The bottom line is that most normal people do not generally achieve very high average speeds unless they are going out with the intention of doing so - ie not regular commuting and solo training rides.

At 55kg, you will be able to run a little lower than the average rider. Been a while since I have ridden on 23s, but at 59kg, I ran at 90 without issues.

The advantage of slightly lower pressure is better comfort, and a little more grip. That comfort, in particular, can equate to more speed on longer rides as you've not been shaken to bits.

    Experiment a little.

Heavier riders will have to use slightly higher pressures as they risk pinch flats with lower pressures.

I was going to say that at 55kg you should be fine at about 80psi front and 90 rear. Conveniently the formula above agrees (55kg is 120lbs 120/3+50=90 then drop 10 on the front).

Depends a bit on your tyres etc but I'd start at around 80-85 front and 90-95 rear and see what feels right.
  • Hi,

If this help (bearing in mind I'm fairly new myself) I've the same bike as you, 86kg ish and I usually have both of mine at 100psi. Maybe a bit high but I've had no issues.
