Best city in the world to cycle in?

Probably been done before, but I am still reeling from this mornings short ride.
Having done most of my riding in the Middle East and being completely ignored by all other road users, what a difference in Amsterdam. I'm on holiday here for a week and borrowed a bike to go looking for some Sunday papers. I had my own cycle lane with lights, I seemed to have right of way over cars at every junction. Pedestrians were all attentive, just heading home and a tram slowed down to let me pass in front of it, I couldn't believe it I had my hands on the brakes and was ready to stop but the tram driver slowed and waved me past - brilliant.
Amsterdam gets my vote.

If you want the opposite try Corby in the UK but make sure you don't stop or get lost as the locals will kidnap you for a shotgun wedding or worse ;)

On the other hand you will break every single speed and distance record you have ever set making the TDF riders look slow as you ride for freedom :)

Sonoma is one of the most beautiful places on earth and a cycling heaven. Just I little further down the highway is Calistoga which again is a paradise on earth and cyclists have the run of the streets.
I guess you can't call these cities in the UK sense but if your ever in the bay area they are worth the effort of visiting.

  • Copenhagen Copenhagen Copenhagen. Nothing else is close. Every street has a two metre wide cycle path, swept clean every night, and rush hour there is something else.

I kind of agree with VTech about Sonoma - though I would add Marin County as well. Stunning, if very hilly, quiet back roads with amazing views (when the fog is out).

As everyone knows, London is the best city in the world. And I happen to cycle in it. Question answered

Yes but - you are a nutter and London is not the best city in the world so question answered in so far as to say that London is the worst city to cycle in. I could only imagine Mexico city to be worse.

London does have the distinct advantage that there are plenty of 'sights' at this time of year but this comes with the distinct disadvantage of death by tipper truck when you get distracted by the aforementioned 'sights'

I dunno, Sao Paolo runs Mexico City pretty close.

Anyhow, let me explain why London is so good to cycle in. As A77 proved in the 'scaffolding for sale' thread, mountain biking is way more interesting than all that roadie tosh  The streets of London have lots of obstacles and things that make a ride to work more like mountain biking than road biking. Instead of rocks and trees, there are potholes, roadworks and these 2 ton metal obstacles - that often move. Random people step out onto the road to test your manoeuvring skills. And in this weather there is plenty of rubbernecking to be done. I arrive at work nicely exercised and very awake/glad to be alive :)

I notice you're not disagreeing with my logic on London and mountain biking. Give in to your anger and join The Dark Side....

Oh dear, rubbernecking was the cause of my last car accident. Another good reason to cycle into work... the route avoids the main city centre and goes through an area devoid of sights worth looking at. Safer journey all round! Of course one journey in 10 I get a sight worthy of crashing for but more often than not I've passed the sight before I got a good look.

BTW Regional, small cities are less of a good option. Yes the roads are safer, drivers are moree considerate, pedestrians hear you coming and move out of the way for you on mixed cycle paths but jeez no excitement.
