Colour me surprised!Correlation is not causation.0

Not Denis, NO!!!!!0

Slightly suspect handling of this.
Back in May 2013 when his retirement was announced a UCI spokesperson seemed to deny that there was any investigation into Menchov: “Currently there is no disciplinary procedure open on the basis of the biological passport." (UCI Communications Manager Devra Pitt Gétaz)

Also, no official press release now from the UCI either.0 -
Didn't the Secret Pro hint at this just before Menchov exited stage left?0

I know, a real shock isn't it? Next we'll find out that he was really an excellent uphill bike handler.Correlation is not causation.0 -
Yes - he alluded to a forthcoming passport case of a GC winner.0

Analytical findings from the 2009 and 2010 Tour.
Ban starts 3 years later, when he's in cycling's long dole queue.
Gotta love the "effectiveness" of this BP lark."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -
Spanish Rabobank rider Barredo also busted. Bit of bad luck Rabo had with their Spanish riders.0

Was there some sort of agreement between him and UCI? Retire quietly and they won't publicise the ban?0

Would you prefer they didn't get popped at all? All helps change the mentality of the peloton if they see fewer and fewer riders get away with doping, even if it takes a while to catch them.0 -
And I guess Jurgen Van Den Broeck finally ends up with a Tour de France podium slot after the ban of Menchov and Contador from the 2010 Tour results.0

By definition BP is a longitudinal anlysis, then there's time for the rider to put forward evidence in their defence (where JTL is now), so not be as quick as a substance positive. Preferable for process to run rather than trial by media whatever the Twaliban may want (is there any other sport where an "a" sample positive comes out before the "b" is tested?)
Sends the message that Cookson spelt out in the cycling podcast...we will get you in the end.0 -

To get hit with a ban after he has retired and that it is kept quiet?
To keep his 2009 Giro title, but get done for his BP levels a month later?
I can't see this sanction will set the peloton trembling. 4 years it took.
Therein lies the rub."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -
I remember the first I heard of Menchov being nabbed by the passport was in the Real Peloton podcast - Matt Rendell said it. Also named someone else I can't remember, but it was a good long time ago.
Edit - It was Rujano.Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.0 -
Interesting list that. What's the determining factor between a 2yr, 4yr and 8yr ban?0

UCI statement:

So far it's just Menchov's Tour results from 2009, 2010 and 2012 that have been stripped. Not sure of the BP timeline so I wonder whether we'll see other results stripped too?

I think it's down to the race organiser if they divvy out the positions (Contador/Schleck) or just nullify the riders results (Armstrong).
The Giro 2009 results are potentially looking great now:

Hopefully it will urge the research of balance in relation to performance enhancing drugs0

Although I don't really like changing the results years on - not the DQ of a doper but promoting riders who were down the GC - I suppose by rights if you were beaten by dopers you do deserve that promotion.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0

So now bottle ends up on the podium :roll:0

Looking down that list, does anyone know if Denis Galimzyanov is likely to make a comeback?
He was a decent rider before he got busted (maybe for obvious reasons...)0 -

I'm assuming that Menchov's blood values were considered normal at times other than those 3 TdFs, so he will keep his other results. Seems strange though, why not just DQ him from the first abnormal finding onwards a la Armstrong?0 -

Both Spaniards are ONCE/Liberty alumni.
I salute Contador's fortitude staying clean on that team. :twisted:It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.0
