How to make a 4 grand bike out of just over 2 grand...maybe.

Hi. I recently bought a Specialized Roubaix SL4 which cost £1150.
I got a discount on it from a friend down to £1095.
The Roubaix has a Fact Carbon 8 frame, which is a fantastic frame, but comes with the latest Sora gear 9 speed and drive set.
Now...

Planet X sell a carbon road bike for £999.00 which comes with Ultegra 11 speed gears, brake levers e.t.c.
To get that on the Roubaix, means spending pretty much 4 grand with Specialized...So...
Wouldnt it be cheaper,if you wanted a 4 grand, brilliant bike,to buy both, for £2149.00 and swop the componants around? Thus saving almost 2 grand and having a top bike, and a half decent training/winter bike...?
Just a thought...

  • A lot of web sites offer groupsets, I think you can buy a full Ultegra groupset for around £500. Maybe an option.

I'm guessing the wheels and finishing kit is different too

But as above, why not just buy the groupset?

With the cost of the groupset you are essentially paying £500 for the spare frame, bars, saddle and wheels. Not knowing what they are it is hard to say if they are worth £500.

If yo have to pay someone else to swap the components the economic argument is compromised further.

My guess is that it's probably a good plan if you need one nice and one not so nice bike.

After buying a Supersix apex and then upgrading everything to get it to a £3k= bike i can honestly say... save yourself the trouble spend £1400-1800 on a secondhand bike....which has everything you want...it would be a lot easier.

And just to agree with others its the wheels that make the most difference then group and finishing kit.

is the argument against second hand carbon somewhat outdated these days then?

@OP just but the groupset if you already have the frame, use the other 500 for wheels, if you already have the finishing kit then all the better.

The frames are different between the two bikes. Yours has Fact 8, the £4k bike has Fact 10. The cheaper bike has a lower quality seatpost, saddle, stem, handlebars and wheels.

If you bought the groupset like others have said you will get a good upgrade. Not comparable to the £4k bike due to the differences I identified above but possibly closer to the other bikes in the range between the two.

That would be getting you a maybe worth 2 grand bike for 2 grand, that you could've bought the same 2 grand bike for 4 grand is not really a saving.

I wouldn't say it was worth 2 grand. I would but it closer to 1.4 being generous.
