I've recently started commuting on my TCR. I don't have another bike to use and don't really have the space to store another, so its my only option.

I've been using a rucksack but its not ideal. I think you have less stability with extra weight on your back, plus I have to wash it regularly as the arm straps get quite sweaty!

Anyway... I want to replace it with some sort of pannier/saddlebag. A pannier wouldn't be ideal as I'd feel like I wanted to remove the rack when I go on longer non-commute rides. Plus, I don't even know if it would mount on the TCR.

So I started looking at larger saddle bags.
These two are the kind of thing I'm after....

No.1 extremely cheap, and their lies the problem - I think it will be low quality.
No.2 looks great, although is pretty expensive!

Does anyone else have any recommendations?

What do you want to put in it?

The topeak aero wedge is good and comes in various sizes.

If you want a really large and high quality bag, then look at the Carradice range.
    Red bikes are the fastest.

Ok, I can give you a couple of options for your larger saddlebag:

    1. Carradice - http://www.carradice.co.uk/ - lots of options from traditional style to more modern, in all sorts of sizes. I've got the Pendle which is 11 litre, waterproof and fits my clothes plus tools/spares/bits and bobs in easily for my commute. I've also got an SQR mount and adapter for getting it off an on the bike quickly. If you find a bag you like then google for the best price as other places sell them and sometimes they're in the sale. They've being going since olden times and are still made in this country...the ladies who make them even write their name on the label so you know :)

    2. Bridge street saddlebag - http://bridgestreet.cc/ - Launched last year as part of a kickstarter thing. More modern, lot lighter, waterproof, come in 3 sizes but dont have the side pockets I like. I'd consider this if I didnt already have the carradice as it works out at half the weight of mine including mounts (for what its worth). Can only buy from that site though I think so you probably wont find it discounted.

    Hope that helps

I saw the Bridge Street saddle bag at the Festival of Cycling at the weekend and they look great - excellent quality and thinking about getting one for my commute days :-)

I have one of these.Comes with 2 size seat tube mounts (and you can buy spare pairs if needed).Clips on and off in seconds. Is expandable.Easily carries a full size waterproof, tools, innertubes etc, sarnies, whatever.Has expander straps on top to put waterproof etc in if required and put other stuff inside it.Never had probs with it at all.If you don't have guards on it even acts as a very good one, keeping water off your bum very well!!

Thanks for the replies - some good recommendations!

It doesnt need to be huge.. but big enough for a change of clothes - So pretty large.

After looking at a few of the options, I've just realised another requirement. The TCR has an aero seatpost, So it really has to be saddle mounted.

Ok I think that rules out the bridge street one, but the carradice bags will be fine as they were originally designed to be fitted that way. Bit more of a faff though.

I found another product that I think I'm going to go with.. #

It's made by Topeak and pretty new, specifically designed for roadies.

Connects behind the rear brake bolt and has velcro straps for the seat stays.
