Cyclocross style all rounder?

Another "which bike" topic! I'm more of a mountain biker but bought a second hand roadie last year. Thinking of starting to cycle commute regularly along the canal tow path which has a few cobbled sections. My roadie is more of a racer, no rack or guard mounts and 25mm tyres max.
I'm looking at a cyclocross style all rounder, steel framed as it sounds like it will be more comfortable over the bumps. Considering these two, other suggestions welcome:

Other than a basic understanding of shimano group sets I'm pretty clueless on the specs so any advice is appreciated!
Thanks
