Am considering Road over Hybrid, finally!

Having cycled a Hybrid for the past 6 years I am now considering going back to drop bars.
Issue I have is my lower back problem, comes and goes, but reason for going Flat Bar was because the pain my Trek 2400 left me in after a ride, back in 2006/7.
I am looking at trying this out and need to know where and maybe what to buy, but not sure I want to spend out a load of money only to be selling it on eBay 3-6 months later.
I have looked at the following...
GT GTR Series 2 at Probike, £899 reduced £540
Trek 1.5c 2013 model for £850 reduced to £599
Or shall I pick up an older bike to try out from eBay, spending even less.... Family man, can't waste money here
Help advise, not purchased a Road Bike since 2004 :-0

Thanks for all the advice AMAZING!!!
Decided to speak to a couple of LBS and get their take on things.... For those who care happy for you to read on...
Due to back issues and needing a comfy bike, lucky for me technology and Bike design has come on leaps and bounds since I last looked. Spoke to Felt dealer first, who advised the Geometry of some of the Road bikes have changed and are more comfy, I know this is something that has been out there for a while, costs would have been higher 2-4 years back.
Next I popped in to a Specialized dealer, owned a Allez many years back and find the guys always helpful. Nice chat and again, pointed me in two directions, explaining the different technologies Specialized offered for a comfy ride.
I have ended up looking at a Carbon framed bike for extra comfort, which means my measly £600 Budget has risen some, but for me the cost is always a worry, due to my back problem, what if I find riding a night mare again... Well Specialized come up trumps over Felt, they have leant me a Specialized Roubaix SL4 for a deposit of £50 which comes off the purchase price if I buy one, or a new Flat Bar
This is amazing, got it home yesterday and basically got and got changed and went out and put 13mls on it straight away. Was a bit weird in riding position as not used to it, but overall very happy with the bike. Not much feedback from the road, cool and it goes quite quick for me
I am out tomorrow for a couple of hours to make sure I get a good ride to be able to make my decision
