Cyclists or chavs on bikes? I very rarely see yer stereotypical 'lycra lout' on the pavement...but I see plenty of chavvy types doing it...the police have threatened to release pictures if they don't come forward, I'd have just released the pictures myself.0

In addition, on my commute, although you do get some lycra peeps jumping lights, it's mainly nodders who seem to be oblivious to lights/pedestrian crossings (anecdotal only of course).0 -
Not cyclists, two blokes on bikes, big difference.0

Meanwhile, the BBC website has no mention whatsoever of the Sussex cyclist being killed after being hit by a car with the driver arrested for dangerous driving: http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/local/ ... -1-6164601 - a case of man bites dog here?"Mummy Mummy, when will I grow up?"
"Don't be silly son, you're a bloke, you'll never grow up"0 -
It doesn't give "us" (people who ride bikes) a bad name
Riding a bike does not make you a good or bad person
You are good or bad according to your actions
This is simply journalists talking up a tale that there are monsters on the loose0 -
No, this isn't giving us a bad name. I don't think that the general public, when they hear the word 'cyclist' think of pedestrian hit and run incidents. They think of red light jumping and 'don't pay road tax'.Faster than a tent.......0

The victim appears to have a good perspective of the events.
"Aaliyah added: 'There were two bad men on bikes who knocked me over and then rode over me."
They were bad men who happened to be on bikes. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -

And if the child had been knocked over by a car would you extrapolate that to 'car drivers being given a bad name'?
Do you think that the mother has all sorts of friends who have also been knocked over by cyclists? If it was the third or fourth incident that year that she had had some personal involvement with then she might reasonably start to develop a low opinion of cyclists as a whole but a one off? Seriously?
Crikey, I'm sure that every so often a cyclist murders someone. Are we to expect that, if that happens, the public will associate cyclists with being murderers? Some sense of perspective is in order - this is a rare occurence. Don't worry about it. It hasn't given us a bad nameFaster than a tent.......0 -
I am reminded of that fella who faked his own death in a canoeing accident. The media kept referring to him as "The Dead Canoeist" which would leave me inwardly screaming that he is not a canoeist and not dead.0

Outgroup mentality rears its ugly head again.
http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/ful ... ogy-crowds is an article on why this happens. Basically cyclists are seen as an outgroup by other road users (and pedestrians), Wiki has a quick definition which helps as well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingroups_and_outgroups (Group Homogeneity)Chunky Cyclists need your love too! :-)

For my sociology degree this was called 'othering' ie defining ourselves in terms of what we are not. And the generation of social stereotypes
I would have thought that these two morons would be easy to identify from strava records...0
