Shimano Alivio front three ring derailleur

I was "maintaining" the front shifter yesterday. Whilst cleaning out all the crud I managed to bring the composite cam and cable guide round by 45 degrees so that rather than it being largely parallel to the vertical frame tube, it is at 45 degrees. To put it back requires rotating it 45 degress to the left as you look from the front. However the top seems to catch on the casting which holds the shifter to the frame. Rather than use a hammer (normal idea), I was wondering if there was any useful and likely better advice before doing so.

the part I mean is in the middle of the photo (red arrow), whr direction of rotation is the green arrow. I cannot seem to get it and the main casting far enough apart. Pulling the derailleur our makes it worse........

Photo as I really can't envisage what you have done, if it's just twisted on the tube, loosen the clamp, realigne and then retighhten the clamp bolt!
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

For clarity - is it twisted on the down tube? Did you remove the shifter cable from its clamp? Is the chain still engaged around any of the front rings?

If the cable is off/removed/slack where is the chain guide in relation to the front rings? It should be over/near the small one. How much did you dismantle in your 'maintaining'?

    Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.
